Based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History by Robert M Edsel, this wartime drama relives one of the greatest treasure hunts in history.

Hitler's army marches across Europe and plunders priceless paintings, sculptures and artefacts.

As the tide turns and the Reich prepares to fall, the Nazis are ordered to destroy the artistic masterpieces they have stolen.

President Roosevelt sanctions First World War veteran and Harvard art historian George L Stout (George Clooney) to lead a platoon of museum directors, architects and historians behind enemy lines to save as many treasures as possible.

Stout recruits six men for the job - museum curator James Rorimer (Matt Damon), Sergeant Richard Campbell (Bill Murray), Sergeant Walter Garfield (John Goodman), Lieutenant Jean-Claude Clermont (Jean Dujardin), Private Preston Savitz (Bob Balaban) and Major Donald Jeffries (Hugh Bonneville) - with invaluable assistance from Parisian curator Rose Valland (Cate Blanchett).

Caught up in a race against time to avert the destruction of 1,000 years of culture, the men risk their lives to return the artworks to their rightful owners.
