It's a question which most newly retired folk ask themselves - what on earth do I do now?

Well, Paul Sorenson, the retired deputy head of Cranbrook School, had the answer.

He recruited two old chums from his own school-days and together they set off to cycle from the London Eye to Istanbul.

Then on their return, Mr Sorenson wrote a book about their adventures!

Mr Sorenson from Hawkhurst travelled with Chris Dowdeswell and Clive Rockell. The three had been at Kingston Grammar School together between 1962 and 1969.

Later, Mr Sorenson became a teacher himself, first at Kent College in Canterbury and then as deputy head at Cranbrook School from 1993 till 2011.

His book is a tale of fun and hazards, sweat and beer.

He said: "For any middle-aged couch potatoes who have yet to raise their heart rates, it is an encouraging tale of tubby men taking on a late-ish life challenge."

They traversed 10 countries to end up in Turkey. Mr Sorenson said: "The journey was a great education as well as a physical challenge."

Though at this stage, we should perhaps reveal that the three - all aged 68 at the time of their adventure - did not each pedal all the way.

Rather they did it in relays of about 50 miles, with one cycling in front and the other two travelling behind in the back-up Peugeot Boxer van, which also served as their home on the odyssey.
