Tunbridge Wells girl selected to feature in Google's online safety campaign

A teenager from Tunbridge Wells has been selected to feature in a national online safety campaign created by Google.

The film is designed to get teenagers working together in an attempt to keep themselves safer on the web and features safety tips from youngsters across the UK.

Each entrant had to create a 15-30 second video giving tips about keeping safe online, and Jess Horsley, 16, was successful in having her video selected.

The project was screened as part of the Well Versed campaign at a special event at Google HQ this week, attended by YouTube stars, MP's and a host of the young talent.

YouTube star KickthePJ, whose teenage audience totals over a half a million subscribers fronts the campaign and also features in the promotional film.

He said: "My success with making films flourished when people started using the internet to get their voice heard, or to hear what others had say.

"It’s been great to see teens in Tunbridge Wells and all over the country get involved, get online, and talk to each other about how to make the best of the internet and stay safe and happy whilst they do so."

Well Versed say the film is made up of advice compiled from teenagers who love, live and breathe the internet.

Jess said: “It’s pretty awesome to be featured in the Well Versed campaign film. When I made my entry I had no idea I’d be picked, but I wanted to share some of the tips I’d learned about staying safe online.

"KickThePJ is one of my favourite YouTube stars, so it’s really exciting to be included alongside him in the final film too.” - Jess Horsley

Google and experts at The Parent Zone joined forces to create the campaign together with the youth engagement agency, Livity.

Dan Cobley managing director of Google UK, said: “Helping young people navigate the online world safely and confidently remains an ongoing challenge.

"We’re delighted with the craft and creativity demonstrated by the entries to the Well Versed campaign and Jess Horsley’s was no exception."
