Road crash halts play at cricket match

A COLLISION between two cars stopped a cricket match when two doctors from the opposing sides raced to help injured passengers.

The accident, between a yellow MGB sports car and a blue Peugeot 306, happened at 6.15pm on Saturday at the junction of Coach Road and the A264 Langton Road, Rusthall Common, near Tunbridge Wells.

Just yards away a game between Rusthall Cricket Club and Chelsfield Park was in full swing. Players broke off to direct traffic as local firefighters arrived to release the cars’ occupants.

An 11-year-old boy, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was taken to the Kent and Sussex Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Nigel Cheek, the Rusthall CC club secretary, said: "We had two doctors playing in the game and they immediately went over to speak to the people in the cars.

"It was an enormous collision but they did not attempt to remove the passengers until the emergency services arrived. Meanwhile, I and other players tried to help by directing traffic away from the scene."

Police said later that the driver of one car had been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. He had been released on police bail until June 11 pending further inquiries.
