Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark joins David Cameron's cabinet

MP for Tunbridge Wells Greg Clark has been named as Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

Mr Clark, previously Minister for Universities, Cities and Science, takes over from MP Eric Pickles who tweeted his support following the announcement just after 2.30pm.

Mr Pickles did not secure a cabinet position.

The promotion means Mr Clark, 46, is now responsible for planning, local government, fire services and building regulation, on top of his constituency duties.

The father-of-three lives with his family in Tunbridge Wells.

This is the first all-Conservative cabinet in almost two decades following five years of coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Clark comfortably retained his Tunbridge Wells seat in last week's election, beating his nearest opponent - Labour's Anthony Kerrigan - by a wide margin to secure the seat's largest ever majority.
