Ramsgate Market opening date revealed after three-year absence

A town’s market is set to return after more than three years as an opening date is announced.

Ramsgate Market will once again grace the seaside streets on April 5, following a long-running saga.

It was snubbed in October 2020, after the operators pulled out.

After that, it temporarily reopened in Staffordshire Street car park but subsequently closed altogether due to a drop in businesses wanting a stall.

Traders in the High Street said the town centre “died” after the market left, and started a petition to bring it back.

Jim Brady, the owner of Heaven and Hell Gifts, told KentOnline at the time: “If something isn’t done soon, I can see my business folding and I don’t think I’m the only one.

“Since the market has stopped the town seems dead.”

In August 2022, Thanet District Council agreed to help get it up and running again, and the following year, it launched a search for an organiser.

The authority also removed restrictions for street trading and hawking on several town centre roads – High Street, Queen Street and King Street.

Finally, last October, it was announced that after a thorough review of potential operators, Bray Associates would be running the outdoor shopping in Queen Street and the High Street.

When revealing the news Cllr Ruth Duckworth, cabinet member for regeneration and growth at Thanet District Council, said: “Ramsgate residents have been telling us that they are keen to see the market return.

“A successful market provides a real focus for any town. Markets bring increased footfall to town centres, and we are confident that this will help Ramsgate’s existing businesses to thrive.

“We believe that the appointment of Bray Associates is in the best interests of our community and will ensure the market’s sustainability in the long run.”

The opening date has now been unveiled by Bray on its website.

It is also searching for traders wanting a stand. Anyone interested is urged to contact their office on 01895 639912 to access a booking form.
