Libertines frontman Carl Barât will headline a Kent gig raising money for a struggling school.

The singer has recently become a fellow of The Margate School, which faced closure last month after funding bids failed to materialise.

The school raised £50,000 from a fundraiaing appeal and is now seeking to raise an additional £100,000 to help it continue its current teaching provision and to make longer-term plans.

The education centre is based in the former Woolworths in High Street, which is on the market for £1.8 million.

Barât, who owns The Albion Rooms hotel in Cliftonville with rest of his bandmates, will play at the No Surrender gig, taking place on the first weekend of March.

The 44-year-old rockstar will be joined by DJ Woody Cook, who is a Gogglebox star and son of musician Flatboy Slim, during the gig, which will be held at The Margate School.

He has described the facility as "an incredible hub of energy and creativity for the town and I’m proud to be a fellow there".

The Margate School told KentOnline: "We are extremely honoured to receive the support of Carl alongside all of the support that's been given from our long-term supporters, students, studio holders and the wider community.

"We are looking forward to an enjoyable two days of fundraising and a chance to bring a fun event to the community, who share our ongoing commitment to accessible, creative education."

The money paid for tickets - which range in price from £20 to £30 - will go towards The Margate School’s further fundraising.
