Thieves strip last ofchurch lead

by Hayley Robinson

A Church has gaping holes in its roof after thieves stripped lead worth more than £130,000 in less than two months.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Borden was targeted for the fourth time last Wednesday night and the remainder of the metal, which had an estimated value of £20,000, was taken.

Last week’s Sittingbourne Messenger revealed how parishioners may have to foot the bill as the church’s insurance only covers £5,000 per year.

Carolyn Lewis, wife of the vicar Fr John Lewis, said: "We had some people up on the roof on Wednesday and they could still see some lead up there. The very next day John went into the church for morning prayer and he could see daylight."
