'Reckless' girls throw sparklers from road bridge

TWO teenage girls were caught in the act throwing sparklers from a bridge onto a busy main road.

The incident, over the A249, has been described by police as dangerous and reckless.

The incident happened on Saturday night at around 8pm. Officers from the Sittingbourne Neighbourhood Team were called by a local resident to Grovehurst Road, Kemsley, where they detained the girls, one aged 18 and the other 14.

The 14-year-old has been given a juvenile reprimand and the 18-year-old was issued with a penalty notice for disorder of £80.

Sgt Darren Ryder, of the Sittingbourne Neighbourhood Team, said: “This sort of dangerous and reckless behaviour will not be tolerated.

"I am shocked at the actions of these two teenage girls who appear to have little or no regard for the people who use the A249."

He stressed: "I would like to thank the member of the public who alerted us to this incident. The outcome could have been more serious. I hope this sends out a clear message that we will not stand for people taking part in activities that could harm others”
