McDonald’s Big Mac lasts nine months without going mouldy in Sittingbourne TikToker’s fast food experiment

A woman conducting an experiment on the quality of McDonald’s food was left stunned when her meal failed to go mouldy after leaving it on a shelf for nine months.

Naa Adjeley left her Big Mac meal and McPlant burger alone for weeks at a time to see what would happen to the fast food.

The 38-year-old, who lives near Aldi in Sittingbourne, said: “I started this experiment due to curiosity.

“I’d always heard that McDonald’s food never went off and I wanted to learn and see for myself. I wanted to see how it might affect the body.”

Naa began the experiment on her Instagram page, @tsofanye, before continuing to document her findings on TikTok and YouTube.

The administrator continued: “My followers stated their shock and began asking me to try it with other fast food meals as well.”

She bought the Big Mac in February of this year and the McPlant in June.

Naa explained: “Nine months on, and the Big Mac looks near enough the same, just drier. There is no mould, smell, or bugs.

“I decided to get a McPlant burger to experiment on as many people assume because something is vegan or vegetarian it is healthier for you.

“However, that too looked more or less the same, it went hard and stuck together due to the sauce.

“It had a large tomato in it which had shrunk so earlier this month I decided to cut it open and look inside.

“Five months on, it had the tiniest bit of mould.”

Naa is a herbalist who uses plants for healing. She began training in the profession following a health scare several years ago.

“My interest started after I visited Ghana on holiday,” she explained.

“I needed emergency surgery after my appendix burst, I was in such a bad way they said I wouldn’t have survived the flight back to the UK.

“That experience made me realise how easily life could be taken away. I could have died because I didn’t know my body.

“That is why I trained to be a herbalist. It made me realise the importance of what we put in our body and my experiment made me shock myself into not eating that food anymore.”

Naa said she used to have McDonald’s as an occasional treat like many people.

However, her experiment has left her questioning the impact it will have on her body in the future.

She said: “My experiment has left me shocked. We’re not being told what is going into our food.

“I’m doing this because it is one thing to have a slightly unhealthy meal every now and then but, what is shocking for me, is why it is legal to sell this type of food to children and adults when we don’t even know the long-term effects of it.

“This food might not kill me today but it might in 20 years.

“I wanted to do this experiment so people ask these big organisations questions – what is being put in this food to make it last so long?”

“We assume because these organisations say it's ok to eat it won’t impact us in 20 years' time.

“It is just like the argument with vaping. Lots of things were advertised as ok in the beginning but after more research, it was found to be bad for our health – just like cigarettes.

“By asking questions now we are holding these companies accountable,” she added.

Since her McDonald’s experiment went viral on TikTok, with almost 100k views, Naa has begun several other fast food experiments.

This month she bought a KFC meal and a Domino’s pizza to see how long they last.

She will also be adding Burger King to the mix in the future.

Naa added: “I am always encouraging people to ask questions and do their research.

“I know this kind of experiment has been done before but people need to be reminded of it again.

“I’m not telling people to stay away from the fast food corporations because they’re evil, I’m just asking them to question them.”

McDonald’s has been contacted for comment.
