Oscar winner films Bird blockbuster in Leysdown, Sheppey

An Oscar-winning director is continuing to film scenes for her latest blockbuster in the county.

It has been confirmed that camera crews spotted in Leysdown, Sheppey, were filming at the seaside location for Dartford-born director, Andrea Arnold, who was shooting more scenes for her new film, Bird.

One mum, who lives near where the filming was taking place, said: “When I spoke to the crew they said it was for a feature film.

“They also recorded my children playing outside for the film.”

It is understood the crews were on the Island across the weekend.

This isn't the first time the English filmmaker has been spotted in the county.

BAFTA award-winning actor Barry Keoghan was seen in Gravesend shooting for the new production.

He is known for playing the Joker in The Batman and has also appeared in Dunkirk, Marvel’s Eternals and the critically acclaimed Banshees of Inisherin.

At the end of June families had front-row seats when filming for the movie happened outside their front door.

Residents of Page Close, in Bean, watched people running through alleyways over and over again and a police car racing up and down their road as filming took place.

It is thought Andrea, who has an OBE and won an Oscar for her short film Wasp, released in 2005, wanted to include her home town in her next big screen project.

Film crews also shot in other locations in the town including in the High Street, College Road and the Hot Rod Diner, an authentic American 50’s restaurant.

It is not the first time Gravesham has been in the spotlight. Last year TV presenter Michael Portillo was spotted filming at the historic pier and Netflix’s The Crown and Junior Bake Off has been filmed at Cobham Hall.

Nell's Cafe, just off the A2 in Gravesend, has also been used as a filming location for countless shows including BBC's Killing Eve and Sky One's Temple.
