One of Sheppey's oldest residents has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Iris Smith, from Davie Court, Davie Close, Sheerness, was joined by family, friends and Mayor of Swale Cllr Alan Willicombe and his wife Jean, for a party on Tuesday.

Iris reveals her secret to such a long life is a happy marriage.

She was married to husband Fred for 45 years, and had two sons. He died in 1980 of a heart attack.

Iris now has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She said: “I’ve always been a bit quiet and not one for drinking and partying. Money wasn’t great but we were happy. I’ve seen a lot of changes.”

Iris is one of many contributors to a new book co-ordinated by AmicusHorizon's Gill Ransley.

One of the memories Iris recalled was buying a house in Granville Road, Sheerness, for about £500 in 1936.
