A lorry got stuck in a country lane after the driver was unable to turn the vehicle around.

Several residents waved at the Italian driver, trying to warn him to turn back, as he made his way down Scragged Oak Lane in Detling and on to White Hill Road.

He tried to turn around in the driveway of a bungalow in White Hill Road – where he promptly got stuck.

He spent the next five and a half hours sitting on Alfred Parbutt’s drive, while police organised a recovery vehicle to pull him out.

Mr Parbutt, 73, said: “The garden wall is fractured and the gate pillar smashed.

“Something needs to be done. We are constantly getting HGVs down here, and the lane is completely unsuitable for them.

“This driver couldn’t speak any English, so the warning sign was of little use.”

Police said the driver was not facing any charges.
