A homeless man has been jailed after asking a woman for a light before grabbing hold of her breasts and fondling them.

Derek Robins, 64, had just appeared before Medway magistrates in Chatham over another offence when he walked up the hill towards the Great Lines Park.

He encountered the woman walking with her partner and a male friend at the Gillingham park.

As Robins approached the trio, he asked them if they had a light and the woman got her lighter out.

At the same time, one of the men also got his lighter out to offer to Robins, but he took it from the woman, lit his cigarette and walked off saying 'thanks'.

However, after turning his back on the three, Robins immediately turned around to face them, walked up to the woman and grabbed her breasts.

The woman froze with shock and could not move out of the way, but moments later regained her composure and was able step back.

Robins, of no fixed address, then ran off and the woman called police who searched the ara.

The incident happened on Friday at 10.35am and police later caught up with Robins and he was arrested before being charged with sexual assault.

He was kept in police cells all weekend and appeared before District Judge Michael Kelly yesterday where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court also heard Robins leads a "wandering lifestyle" and has several previous convictions for drink-related offences, including pubic order offences and common assault.

The judge also heard Robins could offer "no sensible explanation" for his actions and that he was sorry for what he had done.

Judge Kelly jailed him for 14 days as he said it was not possible to enforce a £250 fine because he is homeless.
