A witness has described how bystanders comforted a mother as paramedics battled to tend to her seriously injured six-year-old son.

Emergency services were called to Medway Road, Gillingham, after two brothers were hit by a silver Vauxhall Astra just after 3.30pm.

Both had been stood on the pavement at the time of accident - and one Medway Road resident described how the youngest of the two was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries, before being flown to St George's Hospital in London.

"I came back home and it had just happened," said the woman, who asked not to be named. "There was a little lad on the floor, where the car had hit him.

"The other one was in the police car, but they were more concerned about the six-year-old.

"There were some people around but that was because they wanted to make sure the mum was ok. She was quite distressed. People were gathered around her to give support."

She believed the car had been travelling toward Pier Road, and had crossed on to the wrong side of the road before mounting the pavement.

"Some people said the bloke had sped off, but he didn't - he got arrested," said the witness. "The car was coming down the road and mounted the path on the other side of the road."

Police arrested 54-year-old John Andrew Morris from Gardiner Street, Gillingham, on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and he has now been bailed pending further inquiries until Thursday, December 14.

A breath test did not detect any alcohol, but the driver's phone was taken by police for further investigation.

It is thought the eight-year-old boy - who was taken to Medway Hospital - had suffered an injury to his foot.

Officers are also appealing for witnesses, and particularly want to talk to the driver of a light-coloured Citroen Picasso, which was believed to have been in front of the collision, to come forward.

The six-year-old boy remains in a London hospital in a serious but stable condition, while the eight-year-old has since been discharged.
