The route is now out-of-bound to motorists from its junction with Frindsbury Road to its junction with Cecil Avenue.

It is so emergency work can be carried out by gas company SGN to fix "a gas escape".

The company says it’s too early to say how long repairs will take to complete.

Speaking online, one person said: "Even more chaos for all of us living in Strood".

Another added: “What a mess! Medway Council - how are you going to help local residents today?

“The alternative to Cliffe Road is Bill Street/Cooling Road which will end up blocked without some traffic restrictions in place".

The work is taking place at the same time a 250-metre stretch of the A228, Frindsbury Hill is also closed.

The section of road shut on March 11 and is not set to reopen until June 21.

The closure is as part of a project to build the new Maritime Academy.

Work includes widening the carriageway, constructing an entrance to the school, new traffic signals and extensive resurfacing.

The 5.4-mile stretch of road is one of the busiest in the area, but Medway Council said the closure “is needed so the highway works can be completed safely”.

Motorists got another glimpse of roadworks in the area at the start of March when the A228 shut in both directions between Bill Street Road and Church Green due to a burst main.

It reopened three days later.
