Video footage shows machete attack suspect's arrest in Luton Road, Chatham

Video footage has emerged showing the arrest of a machete attack suspect, who is punched by a police officer during a struggle as he appears to resist arrest.

The short clip was filmed as police were called to a report of a fight involving two men in Luton Road, Chatham, at about 6.20pm yesterday.

Officers attended the scene and, following a search of the area, located a man who said he had been attacked with a machete.

He had suffered a cut to his hand and a reported shoulder injury.

He was arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage and taken to hospital for medical attention.

Within an hour, at about 7.10pm, officers then attended an address in Luton Road.

A statement added: "A 20-year-old man was located outside the property and arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. During the arrest, which the suspect resisted, it is alleged the suspect assaulted and made threats to the officer.

"The constable restrained the suspect who was taken into custody, having also been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are underway."

Police officers are authorised to use force in specified circumstances, so long as it has a "lawful objective", such as the prevention of injury to others or carrying out a lawful arrest.
