An An RAF helicopter, coastguard crews, a lifeboat and police were all called to false reports a woman had jumped from Rochester Bridge.

The search and rescue helicopter launched from Wattisham, Suffolk, just after 8pm yesterday to search for the woman in the River Medway.

Police, Medway Coastguard and the Sheerness RNLI inshore lifeboat also attended after the alarm was raised at 8.15pm.

However, it later emerged the woman had not jumped.

The crews were stood down, some en route, after about half an hour when police reported the woman was safe in police custody.
