Should England’s sports teams have their own national anthem and keep God Save the Queen for British teams?

After Labour MP Toby Perkins moved the English National Anthem Bill for a first reading, we asked Medway personalities what they thought.

England hockey goalkeeper Maddie Hinch, who plays for Rochester’s Holcombe club, said: “England having its own anthem would help Scottish and Welsh athletes to feel part of Team GB more, as they feel they’re singing the English anthem already.

“It makes sense to have two and I love the song Jerusalem.”

Mayor of Medway Cllr Barry Kemp said: “I see nothing wrong with continuing with God save the Queen. It may have been penned in the 18th century, following the Jacobite rebellion, but it has stood the test of time.

"I remember Billy Connolly talking about this on stage. He suggested the theme song from The Archers because everyone knows the words – Dumpty Dumpty Dumpty Dum etc. I’m sure he was jesting, but with Connolly, you never know.”

Cllr Vince Maple, Medway Labour group leader, said: “It is a great idea to have an English national anthem.

"I have a soft spot for Jerusalem although I can also see the great opportunity to perhaps consider a new song in it’s own right. I look forward to the public consultation.”

Major Malcolm Westwood, from the Salvation Army and Churches Together in Medway, said: “With the political decision to encourage devolution, the desire of each country within the UK to have its own anthem may become inevitable.

“We might question why it must contain a spiritual element, such as is in Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

"To me, the question would be, do we want to ask God to bless what it is that we’re doing? If so, let’s have a verse of Luther’s hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our God.

“After all, we’re still nominally a Christian nation. If that would exclude certain parts of the country singing and we prefer an inclusive jingoistic song, then let some appropriate words be written to Greensleeves.”
