Police warning about cold-callers

Companies which try to sell security products over the phone claiming crime is on the up are giving incorrect advice according to police.

People living in Chatham reported the problem to neighbourhood officers after getting calls from a security company saying that crime in Medway has risen and they can help.

According to Kent Police crime in Medway fell by 18 per cent from April to September, resulting in 1,860 fewer victims of crime.

Cases of burglary fell by 32 per cent in this period, meaning 132 fewer crimes.

Police advice is not to buy from cold-callers or allow them into homes.

Sgt Sam Pearson said: "Many of these companies will use tactics, such as providing inaccurate information on crime figures, to scare people in to buying their products and services."
