Despite the recession still biting hard, the generous-spirited young and old dug deep and pulled out all the stops at the weekend to help those in need.

While hundreds were raising money for Children in Need on Friday, Medway Messenger readers were raising a record amount for good causes at the KM Big Quiz in Strood.

Hundreds of people young and old put on fancy dress costumes and put on other events for Children in Need on Friday and over the weekend.

Organisations across Medway took part in the annual event, including youngsters from All Saints’ Children’s Centre, Chatham, who spent the day in pyjamas while staff went to work in fancy dress.

Buildings operation manager Trevor Poulter put aside his blushes and braved work in a fairy costume.

At the Woodlands Children’s Centre in Gillingham, youngsters wore spotty creations in honour of Children in Need mascot Pudsey Bear.

Some also went on a sponsored walk.
