William and Linda Adams appeal parking ticket at Co-op Chatham Maritime

A couple have been given a £60 parking fine after popping into a shop to buy a pint of milk and newspaper – for the second time.

And they are hoping once again they will win their case against the enforcement company on appeal.

William Adams received a ticket after he was recorded going into the car park of the Co-op at Chatham Maritime at about 9.15am.

His wife Linda was then snapped coming out about 1.45pm in the same car.

But the cameras did not pick up on Mr Adams, 69, leaving or Mrs Adams, 67, entering making it look as though their Jaguar convertible had been parked for more than five hours.

The maximum time allowed at the car park, which also serves the Ship and Trades pub and the Fish Bar, is two hours.

In the first incident a year ago, the Adamses, who live in Foxtail Close, St Mary’s Island, examined photographic evidence which showed he had spent no more than 30 minutes there.

He had stopped-off first thing and then returned briefly after spending the day playing golf with friends.

Again, only two out of four journeys were recorded.

The couple made an unsuccessful appeal to CPM and then took their case to the Independent Appeals Service which rescinded the ticket.

Now the pensioners are relying on footage taken by the Chatham Maritime Trust, and provided to them, to prove their innocence.

Mrs Adams is also hoping to see CCTV of her at Avenue Tennis in Featherby Road, Gillingham, where she had spent several hours that day playing a game and having lunch.

A notice from CPM UK Car Park Management has warned them the fine will increase to £100 if they do not pay up within 14 days.

But they are determined to fight the penalty.

Mrs Adams said: “I am retired so have the time to take this on.

“And I can afford to take this all the way if I have to.

“I was told by staff at the trust that we were not alone in this happening.

“They need to get their cameras checked to stop this happening again and again.”

Mrs Adams said: “It just goes to show if you know you are right and stick to your guns it will pay off.”

CPM has yet to respond to a request for a comment.
