Super League rugby comes to Medway on Sunday and former Gravesend RFC player Tony Clubb will be part of the party.

Clubb quit rugby union in favour of the 13-man code when he was young and now makes a living playing centre for the London Broncos.

The Broncos are bringing their home game against Hull FC to Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium in a bid to lure in more fans. And Gravesend-born Clubb insists it’s an opportunity not to be missed.

He said: "It’s a really fast sport, it’s high impact and it’s just an
all-round great game to watch."

Clubb switched to rugby league after a friend recommended it. He said: "I played a lot of rugby union at Gravesend Rugby Club and I had never heard about league. One of my friends said you should come and try out this sport.

"I went along to training, played two matches and thought it was the best sport ever. I quit rugby union altogether and carried on playing league."

Broncos normally attract around 3,000 to their home at the Stoop in London and the trip to Kent follows a similar outing at Leyton Orient FC’s Matchroom Stadium.

Clubb knows he has a fight to make the team, who lost 50-14 to Huddersfield in their last game but has plenty of people coming to watch.

He said: "My girlfriend’s family watched a lot of Gillingham matches at Priestfield. They live in Higham so there will be a lot of us here. To get selected to play first will be nice but there will be a lot of pressure as I’ve not had this much family come to watch me."

Fans attending the match can also watch Broncos’ under-20 team compete. Tickets costs £15 for adults and £5 for juniors, with the senior match starting at 2pm.
