Two crews remain at Chatham Docks in Gillingham to make sure flames do not flare up again following a large fire on Saturday evening.

At its height around 100 firefighters were tackling the blaze.

They were called to the scene just before 5.30pm following reports of a caravan fire. The flames spread to several vehicles, storage buildings and shipping containers.

Clouds of black smoke could be seen drifting across the docks and into Pier Road.

Fifteen crews from around the county were fighting the flames until 10pm and some remained at the site dampening down the flames for the rest of the night.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said because of the intensity of the flames it was not initially possible to see the source of the fire.

She added: “The fire covers an area of about 40 metres by 50 metres.”
