Chaos as roadworks diversion in Wayfield Road, Chatham, sends drivers down closed road

UK Power Networks has come under fire after a road closure caused traffic chaos on a residential street.

The network operator is carrying out works in Wayfield Road, Chatham, but a diversion sign at the site has sent drivers down a closed road, forcing them to turn back again.

A Twitter user reported the issue, stating: “Ridiculous! Diversion sign on Wayfield Road directs drivers to Roosevelt Ave. Three quarters of the way up Roosevelt Avenue the road is closed!

“Please sort this out! Your road signs are misleading & causing significant confusion!

“Hopefully there will be some urgency as it is causing chaos. You're sending vehicles down a single track road only for them to find it closed and they have to try and turn around.”

UK Power Networks said they were investigating, adding: “Sorry. It will take time for the team to investigate and come up with a plan of action.”

Residents on the street also reported being kept up late at night by digging and drilling at the site.

A further statemnt from UK Power Networks added: “We apologise to residents for any disruption caused by our work in Roosevelt Avenue, Chatham. Our engineers tried to keep in contact with local residents while we excavated and repaired an underground cable to ensure reliable power supplies in the local area.

“After extending the working area to complete this work, we have amended our streetworks signage today to improve traffic flow.”
