Kent Messenger employees narrowly escape disaster after alarm triggers full evacuation of the Middle Row office in Maidstone

It was a lucky escape for employees at a local newspaper office today after the publication's editor over-toasted some Easter treats.

Denise Eaton, editor of the Kent Messenger, was busy cooking some hot cross buns in the second floor kitchen when disaster struck.

Smoke from the 'crispy' buns triggered the Maidstone building's alarm and meant dozens of employees had to flee to the safety of Middle Row.

Ms Eaton said: "It was supposed to be a nice gesture. I had no idea this drama would unfold."

However, appreciative staff made the most of the situation by devouring the snacks.
