A new store opened in Maidstone this week, in what could be a resurgence of business in the town centre.

The Tiger store in at 55-57 Week Street sells homewares, stationery, toiletries and toys, and. It is the 17th branch in England for the Danish-owned chain.
Ninety percent of the merchandise is the company’s own brand, designed and manufactured to Tiger’s specifications.

Branch manager Mark Langley said: “We feel sure that the people of Maidstone will find us an exciting and useful addition to the area.”
Town centre manager Bill Moss said the Tiger opening was just the latest indication of the attractiveness of the county town as a shopping and entertainment destination.

Mr Moss said: “With Beales recently opened in the Mall Chequers, Bridges restaurant opening last week and the Buddha Belly due to open in Pudding Lane shortly, things are looking up.”

Other businesses soon to open include the Milano’s Pizza in the High Street, Paddy Power in Gabriel’s Hill and the Fit4less gym in Week Street. Work is also under way on a new restaurant and wine bar for the former Loder and Paynes shop in Bank Street, while the old Liquid and Envy nightclub in Barker Road is to be family venue Wonderland.

The old Green Room, also in Bank Street, is being converted to a Thai restaurant.

Michael Schembri, co-owner of Bridges, said he was pleased with business since his opening on Wednesday of last week. Mr Schembri, who also runs Mickey’s Diner on Blue Bell Hill, said: “It’s been very good indeed. We already employ 12 staff and we could be taking on more.”
