Welling United 4 Braintree Town 1

PATIENT Welling got back to winning ways with four goals in the last 21 minutes of a firey encounter a Park View Road on Saturday.

Referee Grant Smith showed three red cards in a three-minute spell just before half-time.

It meant 10-man Welling had 45 minutes to break down Braintree's nine-man rearguard.

The visitors had held the lead from the ninth minute courtesy of Robbie Martin's precise right-footed free-kick.

But the game came to life in the 41st minute when Braintree forward Lewis Riddle picked up a second yellow card for a second late foul on Steve Perkins.

However, 60 seconds later Perkins himself saw red albeit harshly for a late challenge. In the resulting meleé, Braintree's Bradley Quinton was singled out and shown the red card.

Welling had plenty of the ball in the second half but didn't level until the 69th minute when another late foul by an indisciplined Braintree saw Jamie Day's free-kick was put in by Danny Kedwell.

The Wings were in front three minutes later when Day's corner was headed on by Kedwell and Martin Carthy diverted the ball home from close range.

It was 3-1 on 82 minutes as substitute Ronayne Benjamin chipped home from 20 yards for his first Welling goal.

Kedwell twice went close before completing his brace in stoppage time after rounding keeper Mick Morgan.

The game was played in front of 581 fans, the biggest home gate of the season.
