Wings fight back to reach last eight

WINNER: Des Boateng
WINNER: Des Boateng

Welling United 2 Worcester City 1

WELLING came from behind to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy at the expense of Worcester at Park View Road on Saturday.

Goals from midfielders Martin Carthy and Des Boateng were enough to see off the Conference North play-off hopefuls.

The Wings dominated the early play and visiting keeper Daniel McDonnell beat away Jamie Day's drive before denying Che Stadhart from the rebound.

Leading scorer Danny Kedwell twice went close before Worcester took the lead against the run of play after 19 minutes.

A far post free-kick was headed back into the danger area for Adam Burley to volley home.

Welling showed great spirit to respond as they continued to dominate the first half. Their efforts were rewarded two minutes before half-time when Day's free-kick was powerfully headed in at the far post by Carthy.

It could have been more before the break as Steve Perkins headed over Day's corner at the near post.

Welling went ahead five minutes into the second half when another excellent Day delivery was headed against the bar by Perkins and Boateng's diving header found the net from close range.

Worcester responded but Mark Banks saw his shot deflected over and Graham Ward's dipping volley went just wide.

The Wings held on after more than four minutes of stoppages and Worcester's frustration boiled over at the end as player-manager Andy Preece confronted the referee's assessor in the directors' box as the teams came off.
