Mourners' farewell to lifelong Gills fan

FORMER Gillingham FC owner Tony Smith and his wife, Val, were among the mourners at yesterday's funeral of lifelong Gills supporter Wally Abnett at the Gillingham Cemetery Chapel.

The club chaplain, Richard Hayton, conducted the service. The football club was represented by John Evans, a member of the commercial staff.

Meanwhile, a five-strong team of Gillingham supporters have reached the last 32 of a quiz show on the ITV Sport Channel.

Competing in Manchester, they put paid to the hopes of teams from Everton, Dundee United, Cambridge United and Crystal Palace. The team return to Manchester later in the year for the final.
