GILLINGHAM slumped to a second successive home defeat after somehow losing a match they should easily have won.

Countless chances came and went for the Gills, particularly in the opening half, which enabled Scunthorpe to snatch the victory.

The visitors barely ventured out of their own half in the first half, with Gillingham raining efforts in on their goal, but the Lincolnshire side still went into the break two goals ahead.

Five minutes before the break Richard Hinds nodded in at the far post from Dave Mulligan’s corner kick, which was a sucker-punch for Gillingham, who up until that moment had dominated.

A second goal right on the stroke of half-time from Matt Sparrow put the visitors in charge despite being second best.

Half-time saw Scunthorpe come into the game more, thanks to the two goal cushion and despite Gillingham’s continued determination, they still couldn’t find a way through.

The final whistle was greeted by a chorus of jeers from the home support, who have seen their side go six games without a win.

The result leaves the Gills in the League 1 relegation zone with just four points from their first six matches.
