Elliott Hewitt has joined Gillingham on loan from Ipswich as cover for Michael Harriman.

Hewitt is the third player signed by new Gills boss Peter Taylor in less than a week.

The Gills snapped up former Hull striker Craig Fagan, a free agent, on Tuesday, having taken midfielder John Mousinho on loan from Preston last Thursday.

The 19-year-old is with the Gills for 28 days, following Harriman's call-up to the Republic of Ireland under-21 squad.

Hewitt can play against Sheffield United this weekend but he is not eligible for the FA Cup first round replay at Brackley on Monday night.

Having come through Macclesfield's youth system, Hewitt signed a three-year deal with Ipswich in May 2012.

He played for the Tractor Boys against Gillingham in a pre-season friendly at Priestfield in July and started the season as manager Mick McCarthy's first-choice right-back.

Hewitt made eight appearances for Ipswich last season and has featured four times in the Championship so far this term.
