REFEREE Paul Taylor admitted Swansea’s pitch wasn’t safe enough to play on after a big freeze in South Wales.

The official called the game off soon after arriving at the Liberty Stadium, with the Gills players in town and fans en-route.

Taylor said: "Although the groundstaff have worked extremely hard on the pitch, they were beaten by the weather.

"Seventy per cent of the pitch was playable but the remainder was just not thawing. It’s unfortunate but the safety of the players comes first."

A possible new date for the fixture is Saturday, January 7. Both Gills and Swansea are without a game because they are out of the FA Cup.
