Career-best figures thrill Spitfires paceman

Kent match-winner Robbie Joseph said the experience of losing Saturday's Lord's Friends Provident Trophy final against Essex helped him to take his five-wicket haul in Monday's emphatic NatWest Pro40 win against Derbyshire.

The Antigua-born paceman recorded career-best league figures of 5-13 to help dismiss Derbyshire for a paltry 60, a total Spitfires then knocked off in 37 minutes to win by nine wickets.

Joseph said: "Although it was horrible to lose, overall I had a good day Saturday at Lord's when some things worked out well for me and I just tried to focus on the things I did right then and bring those back into my game here today.

"They (Derbyshire) played a few 'killer' shots early on and we kept the pressure on them thereafter. Amjad Khan bowled very well from the other end, we just bowled well in tandem and that paid off.

"Now I'm playing regularly I'm in a rhythm and I know exactly what I have to do when I get to the wicket. I'm focussing on the simple things and leaving the rest to look after itself now."

Talking about his transformation from fringe player to first-choice selection, Joseph added: "I sat down with the captain over the winter and spoke about how we must keep evolving as players.

"He spoke about how he'd introduced those fine sweep shots that he plays and challenged me to improve and learn from every performance as well.

"That's all I'm trying to do now. I felt I was too greedy with the lines that I bowled at Lord's, so today I just tried to bowl a disciplined line just outside off and I got the rewards for it.

"We knew people would be watching us today because it was disappointing for everyone to lose in the final and we needed to pick ourselves up, which is what we did."

Kent return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Lancashire to St Lawrence for a LV Championship match scheduled for an 11am start.
