YOUNG prospect Jack Budge scooped a silver medal in the Royal Navy ABA Golden Gloves Championships in Yorkshire last weekend.

The promising Rochester-based 13-year-old travelled to Knottingley to contest the finals having come through five stages of qualification.

He was beaten over three rounds in the deciding bout, with the judges scoring the contest 11-1 in the favour of last year's undefeated schoolboy champion.

"I felt he was hard done by," said Budge's trainer Dave Bowler, of St Mary's BC.

"I'm not saying we won the fight but we're positive it was much closer than the scoreline suggested."
