JOHNNY ARMOUR: "Hopefully there is a British or European belt down the line"

FORMER WBU world champion Johnny Armour will climb back in the ring next month for his first fight in two years.

The Chatham boxer will fight Ghanaian Richmond Assante of East Ham Boxing Club in a title eliminator at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham on Thursday, June 16. Assante is known to have a big punch.

Armour has been out of action since his defeat to Nathan Sting in July 2003.

He said: "It’s been nearly two years since my last fight and its been a long wait for me.

"It’s going to be a featherweight match because Assante is a couple of pounds heavier than me."

The 36-year-old has been training at Echoes Gym in Strood after having his comeback delayed by injuries since his loss to Sting.

But now he claims he is in top-notch condition, saying: "I’m feeling really good at the moment and will be looking to peak for the day of the fight. We’ve been told this is a title eliminator and hopefully there is a British or European belt down the line."

* Tickets are £30 or £50 for ringside and are available from Johnny on 01634 325714 or 07909 816016.

They are also available from the Eagle Tavern and City Wall, in Rochester High Street, the Waggon at Hale and The Cherry Orchard in Parkwood.
