Wind turbine for school grounds

A wind turbine is to be built in a school’s grounds despite opposition from neighbours.

The scheme by governors at Mascalls School, Paddock Wood, and Kent County Council’s education directorate was approved by county councillors this week.

The 41ft turbine, which will replace a disused 50ft radio mast, will, councillors were told, help educate pupils on climate change and sustainable energy. It will, it is hoped, also raise awareness of the issues within the community and help reduce energy consumption.

Neither Paddock Wood Town Council nor Tunbridge Wells council objected to the scheme, although councillors were told three neighbours were opposed, claiming it would blight the High Weald’s unspoilt natural beauty.

After the meeting, school manager Guy Gore sought to reassure objectors.

"The mast will be unobtrusive and we have picked a turbine without gears so, from the point of view of the neighbours, we think it will be virtually invisible."
