Unbeaten Gillingham top League 2 after their opening seven games but this is just the beginning, according to boss Martin Allen.

The Gills manager has already announced his desire for the side to break records this season and they head for a top-of-the-table clash at Port Vale on Saturday in buoyant mood.

Allen said: "This is only the beginning. We are only just starting. This is just going to keep rolling on and on now.

"We’ve got 19 points from seven games and it should have been 21 but I messed it up against Chesterfied.

"I made an error in the way I got the team to play, the tactical formation that I set up.

"We have to keep going. I don’t know where we are in the league most of the time, I don’t even look. It’s nice for all of the supporters, players and the football club to be top but I don’t really look.

"All I try and do is make us better and look after our players and staff."

He added: "You could see the excitement in the crowd on Tuesday and the respect they have for the players.

"I always say if the players put the shift in then proper supporters back their team."
