Syren - ready to rock the Westcoast

Alternative rock band Syren headline the second Gig 4 A Quid session at Margate’s West Coast tonight (Friday).

The all girl trio deliver powerful and well-crafted songs with the dynamics and intuitive tightness that comes from a busy gigging schedule.

The band formed in America in September 2006 and went on to record their debut album Dehumanized, which was self-released in January 2008.

Having been offered a tour of the UK, Syren decided to relocate and since their arrival they have played many of the country’s top venues. After making an impression on the highly-respected band Hawkwind at last year’s Hawkfest, Syren were invited to open the show for them twice during the winter tour.

Opening the night are The Mop Collective who met while studying music at Canterbury Christ Church University. They take their influences from a variety of sources including Frank Zappa, Radiohead, Oceansize and Cardiacs.

Also appearing are Ramsgate-based band The Starfighters, who formed in 1987 with the late and legendary Robert Calvert of Hawkwind fronting the band before his death. The band have been going in various guises since then and still create a great psychedelic rock sound.

Main support band are the Shilling Whores from Whitstable, who have won praise for their dynamic stage show, intelligent riffs and a dirty mayhem-driven sound.

Doors open at 7.30pm and the first band will be on at 8.15pm.
