Tips on coping in poor weather

CHURCHILL Insurance is offering the following tips to drivers who are faced with adverse weather conditions.

* If you're driving in heavy rain, brakes will be less effective, so allow double the normal braking distance.

* If you go through water, you should always test your brakes. If you are concerned that they have been flooded, drive with the brake pedal down slightly until they have dried out.

* In heavy rain, switch your headlights on.

* If you find yourself aquaplaning, don't panic. Try to keep your driving as smooth as possible. Don't slam on the brakes, but allow the car to slow down naturally by easing your foot off the accelerator. Try to keep the car in a straight line with gentle steering motions.

* Don't stop or speed up if you do have to cross water. Continue driving slowly in first gear, keeping the revs up by sliding the clutch if necessary. This will stop water going up the exhaust pipe. Put on your hazard warning lights so that other drivers are aware of your presence and the situation.

Kay Gorman of Churchill Insurance, said: "If a journey is essential, then a few simple rules should help to minimise any risks."
