A thug who knifed a man in the back outside a shop in Canterbury has been jailed for five years.

Vicious Robert Biggs plunged a four-inch blade into Kamil Jablonski in Military Road after the pair became embroiled in an argument.

Canterbury Crown Court heard the 34-year-old, of no fixed address, had yelled racial abuse at his victim moments before the attack.

Judge Adele Williams said: "I have no hesitation in concluding that you pose a significant risk to the public.

"On this day you were carrying a knife which you used for a trivial altercation.

"You are a dangerous offender and you have the seriously aggravating feature of your previous record."

The court had been told that Biggs's previous convictions include common assault, attempted robbery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possessing weapons, burglary, public order offences, criminal damage and battery.

In 2001, he was sentenced to 10 years for robbery and released on licence having served seven. He was twice recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

Jim Harvey, prosecuting, said that on March 7, Biggs and Mr Jablonski had exchanged words outside the shop.

Mr Jablonski and his friends had tried to walk away, but were then aware of Biggs following them.

He then stabbed Mr Jablonski, who was taken to hospital and treated for a two-inch wound to his back.

Biggs was arrested and made no comment in interview.

Phil Rowley, defending, said his client had accepted he was going to prison and would seek help for "his issues".

Biggs will serve at least three years of his sentence in custody and will then eligible to serve the other two on licence.
