Joshua White complained
about speeding drivers

by Nisha Chopra

Motorists are being asked to cut their speed - by an
11-year-old schoolboy.

Joshua White, from Tunbridge Wells, was so worried about cars
whizzing down Southview Road that he wrote to the council in the
hope they would put in speed bumps.

People living in the residential road, which has a 30mph
limit, claim drivers use it as a rat-run during school pick-up
and rush hours – travelling at up to 50mph.

Tunbridge Wells Borough Council asked Joshua to head up
a speed awareness event at which motorists'
speeds were checked.

He and other chidlren also created banners warning drivers their
speeding can kill - one read: “This isn’t Mario Kart.”

Joshua, who goes to St John’s Church of England Primary School,
said: “I hope that people will realise you should slow down on our
road - we live here and we want to be safe."

Cllr Caroline Derrick, road safety campaign group
TWiTA chairman, said: “What concerned us was the fact that an
11-year-old was that worried about his own road that he felt he had
to write to hia local council to have something done.

“Eleven year olds shouldn't be worried about the safety outside
their own house.

“The road isn't just about the car, it’s about pedestrians,
cyclists and children and at the end of the day bad behaviour costs
lives.”
