The line-up for the new Step 6 League in Kent football could be confirmed by the end of next week.

All the clubs invited to take part in the inaugural competition next season accepted their place with the exception of two sides, Ashford United - who are keen to secure a place in the Kent League - and Erith & Dartford Town, who are currently without a ground.

Mike Appleby, the FA’s head of leagues and competitions, revealed the constitution of the new league should be ratified by the end of next week - though flexibility will be ensured to allow Ashford to take part, should their application to join the Kent League prove unsuccessful.

It means an uncertain wait for Ashford's new boss Tony Reynolds (pictured) and the club's supporters.

Mr Appleby said: "All the clubs invited have accepted their place with the exception of those two teams. Ashford are hedging their bets that they’ll be included in the Kent League but will have to wait to May 20 to find out.

"If they are not then they will still have a place in the new division, this is the lowest level they could play in."

He revealed the FA’s alliance committee would meet to work on the constitution next Tuesday and the leagues committee would then meet to ratify it on Friday, May 20.

Meanwhile, Mr Appleby acknowledged that the formation of the division means that promotion and relegation issues in the Kent County League will not become clear for some time.
