Loan midfielder Anton Robinson is heading back to Huddersfield after suffering a serious knee injury.

The 27-year-old, who has played 14 times for the Gills since joining on loan at the end of January, has suffered cruciate ligament damage and could be out for six to nine months.

It was a blow to Gills boss Martin Allen, who had earmarked Robinson (pictured) as a potential player for next season’s League 1 campaign.

“He would have definitely been a player I would have looked at for next year,” said Allen. “It has messed my plans up. He has been brilliant for us.”

Robinson turned his ankle in the game against Rotherham but was there on Saturday to see the Gills clinch promotion against Torquay.

There is better news for Jack Payne, however, who is on loan at Peterborough.

Payne, on loan from Gillingham with a view to a permanent move, could be back playing for the Championship side this weekend – after scans revealed that the midfielder’s ankle injury isn’t as bad as first thought.

He came off the field last weekend, in Peterborough's draw at Huddersfield, with a serious looking injury.

But Posh boss Darren Ferguson, who at first feared the worst, said: “There is plenty of bruising and swelling, but only a small amount of ligament damage, so he has a chance for the weekend.”
