No broken bone for Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller but Chris Palmer goes under the knife

Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller could be fit to face Torquay on Saturday after fears of a fracture proved unfounded.

Intense swelling after last weekend’s match against Northampton left Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler fearing the worst.

There was concern that Spiller (pictured) had broken a metatarsal bone in his foot after kicking the boot on an opponent.

"He just has bruising to the top of the foot so he should be in contention," said Hessenthaler.

Spiller has played in the majority of Gillingham’s game this season, missing just three matches and making 24 appearances.

The news on the fitness of fellow midfielder Chris Palmer isn’t so good though.

Palmer netted five goals during a great personal start to the season but a knee injury has left him sidelined since the end of November.

He underwent an operation this week and looks to be sidelined for several more weeks yet.

Hessenthaler said: "He is obviously down at the moment because he’s going to be missing for a few more weeks now.

"We need to keep his spirits up because it can be hard when you are out injured and when he was in the side he was playing very well."

The club’s medical team will also be keeping a close eye on Danny Jackman after he picked up a knee injury.
