Missiles thrown at moving vehicles

KENT Police have issued a warning after objects were thrown at moving vehicles in two separate incidents in the county.

Witnesses are being sought after part of a paving slab was thrown through the windscreen of a van as it travelled through Chartham, near Canterbury, on Thursday, Februry 9.

Police say the driver of the van was lucky to escape unhurt in the incident that occurred at around 1.30pm on Shalmsford Street, close to the junction with Mystole Lane.

Damage estimated at around £100 was caused to the yellow Leyland DAF van involved.

Anyone who can assist police is asked to contact PC Sarah Upton on 01227 762055.

In a separate incident, a large stone was thrown at a moving vehicle on the A28 at Bethersden, near Ashford. It resulted in a large dent on the roof of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, causing damage estimated at £50.

It happened close to the spot where a brick was thrown at a car in November 2003. The driver of that car, a local woman, lost the sight of one eye. Despite an extensive police investigation in 2003 no arrests were made.

Chief Insp Stuart Kehily said: “We are urging all drivers on that section of the A28 to be vigilant and aware that this recent incident has taken place.”

“We are not linking the 2003 case with this latest incident. However, it is extremely dangerous to throw anything at a moving vehicle, and the driver and passenger in this car were very lucky.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident at Bethersden is asked to contact Ashford Police Station on 01233 896181.
