Gillingham strengthened their lead at the top of League 2 on Saturday but boss Martin Allen isn’t getting carried away.

A win over Plymouth was coupled with a home defeat for title rivals Port Vale, to leave Allen’s side five points clear at the top with a game in hand.

But Allen stressed: “The job is not done. Let’s not get carried away. When we don’t win we only lose three points and when we do win it’s only three points gained.

“I don’t care how the other teams got on. It is just about us getting as many points as possible, as quickly as possible and that goal has never changed.

“I can probably understand and respect that everyone will be looking at the table and results and if I did that can you imagine what a crack-pot I would be?

“I have to prepare the players to play against Exeter on Tuesday night. I am sure all the supporters went home and celebrated but the players went home to rest and I watched the DVD.”

He added: “These are exciting times but I don’t look at other clubs and this and that and take my eye off what is important, it is only us and our players.

“I said from day one there would be ups and downs. I said there would be tricky times. It is how you cope with it."
