Illegal waste carriers were the target of a joint operation between Medway Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team and Kent Police.

The team spent a day on Medway City Estate in an operation targeting waste metal carriers. In total officers inspected more than 40 vehicles and although many were operating within the law and provided relevant documentation, a number were found to be carrying waste illegally.

Fourteen were issued with fixed penalty notices for failing to produce authority to transport waste. The notices are issued under powers contained within the Control of Pollution Act 1989 and carry a fine of £300.

Additionally, Kent Police seized three vehicles, which were uninsured and arrested a man in connection with other offences.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Enforcement Cllr Rehman Chisti said: “I welcome the strong partnership work carried out by council officers and our colleagues in Kent Police. Initiatives such as this will make it increasingly hard for people to operate illegally in our area and will further serve to create safer communities for our residents and legitimate businesses.”

Neighbourhood Inspector Robin Wharfe said: “This operation shows that police and our partners in Medway are intent on working together to tackle, reduce and put an end to those problems that residents in the community tell us about.

“We aim to continue these initiatives and will use any available options to improve the quality of life across Medway’

Medway residents should ensure anyone removing waste for them is licensed to do so. Failure to comply can result in prosecution. Residents are advised to check the details of any waste carrier with the Environment Agency on 08708 506506, Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm, and make sure they keep all documentation.
