A man was reprimanded and kicked off a jury today after he overslept and was late for court.

Judge Martin Joy told the juror his explanation that his alarm clock did not go off was unacceptable.

The trial at Maidstone Crown Court had been due to start yesterday, but there was a further delay until after lunch because of the late juror and a fresh panel being sworn.

"This has cost the country at least £1,000," the judge told him. "I have to consider whether it is right to fine you. I also find you have held the court in contempt by being late.

"You have not given your duty as every citizen has to act as a juror. You have not given it due and proper priority."

The judge said he was discharging the man from the case but he would remain available to serve on other juries.

He warned: "Your card will be marked and your conduct will be drawn to the attention of any other trial judge or barrister.

"If you are late tomorrow, it must be reported to the judge and I have no doubt you will find yourself behind bars."

Judge Joy told the remaining 11 jurors: "It has caused an enormous delay to the barristers and all the auxiliary services. It is all very unfortunate."
