A major blaze at a waste oil storage site has been brought under control by firefighters.

Crews were called to the fire at a depot on Kingsnorth Industrial Estate in Hoo at around 11pm last night.

It soon spread to the depot yard where 1,000 litre plastic oil storage containers and 200 litre steel oil drums caught light.

Burning oil then flowed onto nearby land that had been cleared for development.

Firefighters brought in back-up from specialist appliances, including three foam units (one from Kent, one from London and one from Essex), compressed air foam appliances, a high volume pump, a height vehicle and crews from around the county.

They managed to prevent the fire spreading to three nearby industrial units, while others surrounded the fire using the foam units.

Graham Gash, area manager from Kent Fire and Rescue said: "Crews have done a great job in fighting this serious fire and successfully managing to prevent it spreading further and damaging nearby buildings.

"We worked alongside our partners, from the London Fire Brigade and Essex Fire and Rescue Service, and I think praise goes to everyone for a job well done. We will stay on today to damp down the fire."
